up the coast in 1770 to warn other sailors. Despite Cook's
efforts, in 1846 a ship named the "Coolangatta"
was wrecked off the coast and the town was named in its honour.
The name Coolangatta is also said to mean ‘pleasant
outlook’ in Aboriginal language. The Tweed River was
developed as a port from the 1830s to ship cedar. Coolangatta
established Queensland’s first surf life saving club
in 1909.
